Description:
There are two Jewish cemeteries in Suceava. The old one, in str. Stefan Tomsa, was recently documented by the Jewish Galicia-Bukovina organization, see https://jgaliciabukovina.net/he/232444/cemetery/suceava-old-jewish-cemetery".
The new Jewish cemetery of Suceava is in str. Parcului #6. Burials in this cemetery started in the early 1880s, and it is active these days.
The first JOWBR documentation phase of this new cemetery was made by Merle Kastner, based on over 800 images taken by Mickey Rostoker, MD, and Dr. Marcel Mindrescu in the early 2,000s.
This 2nd documentation phase adds and merges information from the following sources:
- Cemetery index, made in June 1951. Later burials are partially recorded. This index was recently scanned by Mr. Alex Grigorescu. The index holds 2,604 entries (most duplicate entries filtered out).
- Almost all entries of this index include lot# and burial# definition, but these remain useless until cemetery maps are found and published.
- Additional headstones images taken by Lily Pauker, Prof. Gadi Rennert, and Udi Katzir.
- Vital records from the Suceava archive, mainly death records – but also birth and marriage ones. The research on this source is far from being thorough enough.
All this produced a database of almost 2,700 burials, about 760 of them accompanied by headstone image, to be recorded in JewishGen JOWBR. In parallel, over 80 memorials, engraved on part of these headstones, were submitted to JewishGen Memorials & Plaques Database.
